i never used a dishcloth before today

all i have been doing lately is knitting dishcloths. yes. dishcloths:

the only problem is (as was pointed out to me today by my dear friend E) that i don't think i've ever used a dishcloth before in my life. what does one use such a thing for? so, i went on a search for the answer on the always reliable interweb and found out that while there are lots of knit and crochet patterns for dishcloths, they are, apparently, also a bit disgusting.

they are pretty, though, right?

to be perfectly honest, i will admit that the last installment of my 2010 dishcloth marathon is quite ugly indeed, and i simply will not reveal any photo of the thing. i could barely stand to bring it on the bus for morning knitting for fear of public proof that i would knit something so ugly. now i have a collection of 6 lovely (and 1 not so lovely) dishcloths, which may one day be the source of our demise.

wednesday's poems

this is one of my favorite poems, it is by ee cummings:

i thank You God for most his amazing
day:for the leaping greenly spirits of trees
and a blue true dream of sky;and for everything
which is natural which is infinite which is yes

(i who have died am alive again today,
and this is the sun's birthday;this is the birth
day of life and of love and wings:and of the gay
great happening illimitably earth)

how should tasting touching hearing seeing
breathing any-lifted from the no
of all nothing-human merely being
doubt unimaginable You?

(now the ears of my ears awake and
now the eyes of my eyes are opened)

knitting studio

this sunday, like most, i am teaching my knitting studio class at twisted.  the class is designed for knitters of all skill levels.  if you are stuck on a project, need help deciding what to make with some yarn from your stash, want to learn a new technique, or just about anything else, drop in and hang out with us!  my focus in the class is having fun, helping knitters gain confidence, and teaching students not just how to solve the problem or question at hand, but also to build skills to tackle new knitting adventures.

the class is every sunday from 3:30-5:30 at twisted.

more information about all of twisted's classes can be found here.

wednesday's poems

WAGE PEACE
by Mary Oliver

Wage peace with your breath.
Breathe in firemen and rubble, breathe out whole
buildings and flocks
of red wing blackbirds. Breathe in terrorists and
breathe out sleeping
children and freshly mown fields.
Breathe in confusion and breathe out maple trees.
Breathe in the fallen and breathe out lifelong
friendships intact.
Wage peace with your listening: hearing sirens, pray
loud.
Remember your tools: flower seeds, clothespins, clean
rivers.
Make soup.
Play music, learn the word for thank you in three
languages.
Learn to knit, and make a hat.
Think of chaos as dancing raspberries,
imagine grief as the outbreath of beauty or the
gesture of fish.
Swim for the other side.
Wage peace.
Never has the world seemed so fresh and precious.
Have a cup of tea and rejoice.
Act as if armistice has already arrived.
Don't wait another minute.

mounds of snow and malabrigo

have i told you how i have a bit of a thing for the presidents? i mean, not for THE president...well, wait, yes, i do have that too..but, what i'm talking about here is a bit of historical fascination about the office of the president of the good 'ol us of a.  so, based on this interest of mine, i am strongly in favor of really getting out there and celebrating president's day, a much too under-rated holiday.  this president's day was quite fabbity fab, because i spent the weekend in dc:

and didn't even have any flight delays!  i got to spend some time with my family, and trudge around in the snow, which was quite silly, and slippery, and enjoyable.

but did i make good on my promises of casting on?  well, i got started on citron
and after a few false starts and a bit of hair twisting and lip-biting i just about finished the cowl i am test knitting

both of which projects are quite lovely in all their malabrigo splendor.  i did not, however, succeed in casting on all of my other lovely plans due to such troubling instances as (1) my day job, (2) not being able to find the right size needles, (3) packing at the last minute, and (4) being too lazy to do gauge swatches.

starting not finishing

every once in a while, i get a little bored and cast on one or three or six or ten projects in one night.  tonight is that night.  tomorrow i leave for d.c. (if the weather back east ever lets up) for a red-eye flight through jfk to dulles.  so.  what i need are some new projects to tide me over.

in 2009, i knit at least 8 sweaters (a couple of those were baby sweaters).  2 such sweaters only need sleeves and they will be done...but...sleeves!  oh sleeves, what a boring business to knit!  2010 is the year of the one-skein project, the year of stash-busting, the year of the sweater hiatus!

so, let's cast on, then:

Ocean Breezes Hat!
Windschief!
Citron!
Spiral Cowl!

And also, test knitting a cowl from Malabrigo Chunky for my darling friend Shannon.

hello

hello and welcome to this little piece of the interweb that i will call my own.  here we will talk knitting (mostly) with a little bit of this and that thrown in for good measure.

i teach knitting classes at twisted, where i get to spend my time with lots of wonderful knitters.

i am an attorney practicing intellectual property law, which includes s trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, and lots of other interesting subjects that tend to collide head on with the online world.  i work on transactional and litigation matters related to intellectual property, as well as general commercial litigation.

i especially love to read, write, plant, breathe, learn, taste, travel, and listen.
